Super Tuesday?? Not Really

Read Time:2 Minute, 2 Second

Super Tues, when 15 states hold their primary elections, is sometimes exciting—and sometimes not! File this one under NOT. Super Tuesday is only super when a number of Presidential contestants are jockeying for position, when there are real consequences that derive from each state’s vote, and when the eventual nominee is in doubt. But this time around it’s all smoke and mirrors—there’s nothing to be decided.

In  one corner we have tweedle-dee, the aging and only-sometimes-effective incumbent, and in the other corner we have tweedle-dumb (spelling intended), the authoritarian darling of every uneducated factory worker who longs for the good old days, you know, when being white and being male made you king of the castle. But they are not going head-to-head. They are merely engaging in parallel play. CNN and Fox and MSNBC will go on all night about precinct-level vote totals for the top dogs and about whether Nikki Haley will finally call it a day. Let’s face it. They’ve hyped up the idea of Super Tuesday and they have a seemingly endless number of hours to fill.

There are actually some interesting state races to call. In California, will it be the House of Representatives’ Adam Schiff, or will it be the Dodgers’ Steve Garvey pinch-hitting for Diane Feinstein?  In North Carolina, will the choice be between liberal, Jewish Josh Stein or Black, Trump-backed Mark Robinson? Analysis of races such as these might be an interesting twenty minute diversion from life as usual.

Super Tuesday will be November 5. That’s when we decide between over-the-hill and out-of-his mind. That’s when we decide whether Ukraine will be backed or abandoned; whether a woman’s control of her body will disappear completely or have a shot at being reaffirmed; and whether we stay the course, however shaky, or go the route of dictatorship.

That’s when all the marbles will be on the table, and those results will have my rapt attention. So till then I will quietly await a time, soon enough, when the preliminaries are over and the two heavyweights take to the ring with the championship belt on the line. Till then, I’ll give CNN the quickest of looks, yawn once or twice, and check out some “real” drama, to be found most likely on Netflix or Hulu.
