On the Nature of Dogmatism

I was thinking that there is something to be admired about those who are dogmatic. Not admired, really, but envied, sort of.

It seems to me as if dogmatists live stress-free lives.  Folks of that sort are quick to find solutions. They never worry if they are right, and they are rarely if ever troubled by counter-arguments. For the dogmatic, the world is black and white. The color gray doesn’t exist, and the idea of shades of gray is totally unimaginable. Oh, to be among those who instantly know friend from foe, right from wrong, good from bad—and never even think to ask whether another perspective might ever exist.

What’s your objective, we ask the dogmatist.

It is victory, plain and simple.

But what do you mean by victory?

We win, they lose.

At all costs?

Yes.

Do you ever consider the consequences, long term vs short term?

No difference.

Domination?

Yes.

Intimidation?

Sounds like a good idea.

By the way, what are your politics?

Extremism.

I’m confused. Are you a Democrat or a Republican?

Yes I am.

An Israeli or an Arab?

Yes I am.

Ever heard the word compromise?

I think so, but I don’t like it.

Not part of your vocabulary?

Not part of my mindset.

Have you any respect for your opponents?

Are you kidding?

You know, because they’re human beings too.

Ah, but that’s where you’re way off. They’re not.

Ever think of running for office?

Sure. To rule is to impose your will.

Which is a good thing,  I assume.

Well, my fine fellow. It looks as if you’ve finally got it!
