I’ve seen many one-sided losses in my time. My beloved Patriots once lost to the Dolphins 52-0, and the Red Sox lost a couple of years ago 28-5 to the Blue Jays. But I just finished watching the debate last night, and those looked like great high points for my teams compared to the score of last night’s Trump-Biden debate.
Prior to the main event, I listened to the pundits say that Biden needed a big win and I hoped that this would be the moment that things turned around. Trump would be asked direct questions about Roe vs Wade, about the insurrection at the Capitol, about being Putin’s patsy, he would tell his lies, and Biden would put his feet to the fire.
But…
Biden was awful. Instead of saying hello to the American people and making a brief personal statement, instead of opening by acting like an amiable and competent candidate, Joe launched hoarsely and in a monotone into a batch of statistics that were dry and uninteresting.
My guess is that the people who prepped Biden wanted him to be full of facts so that he would seem knowledgeable. He would have the facts at his fingertips. Still, didn’t they realize that it would likely make him dull and boring?
And, by the way, prep-people, did you not tell him where the camera was and that he needed to look into it? Did you not tell him that he shouldn’t spend the whole time looking lost with his mouth open, and that he shouldn’t be looking down much of the time Trump was speaking, making him look like he was asleep?
Joe, on problems at the border, where Trump went on and on about felons and rapists, how could it be that you failed to mention the fact that your bipartisan bill failed only because Trump threatened any Republican who voted for it.
How could it be that you weren’t really prepared to answer the are-you-too-old question?
Joe, as you went along, for a little while you seemed to wake up, calling Trump the worst President ever, showing a smile and coming to life, but it was short-lived and it was truly too little, too late.
And then in your closing statement, in your last chance to leave people with a favorable image and to make this a referendum on that liar and cheat Trump, how could you totally miss your opportunity by mumbling on about tax cuts and a range of issues that aren’t at the center of this election?
After this debate, if the opponent weren’t Trump, I’m not sure I would cast my vote for this man who seems so far past his prime.
Am I being too melodramatic, but does it seem at this moment that all is lost?
Is it too late to find another Democrat?
Is it too late to buy a ticket to Canada?
Did not sleep well last night.
