More Quick Thoughts

Sitting at home for too long can addle the brain, I’ve determined. But I’ve also determined that not sitting at home can be dangerous to life and limb, so… I’m sitting at home.

With lots of time on my hands, but currently at a loss for making an organized, lengthy–or even coherent—argument, I will settle for putting down some brief, random thoughts, as deep as they are long.

  • Donald Trump has no idea what he is doing.
    • He wants to blame China for all of this, but he doesn’t seem able to be angry at the Chinese leadership for more than a day before turning around 180 degrees.
    • One day he says that it’s absolutely up to the federal government to decide when to open up the country, then on the next he says it’s for the states to decide.
    • Along with his experts Fauci and Birx, he encourages social distancing, then tweets all night long encouraging protests against social distancing.
  • You’d think that all this inconsistency is part of some brilliant and deliberate strategy, but then you realize who you’re dealing with, and the more likely explanation runs directly counter to both ”stable” and “genius.”
  • The other day I watched the good people of Florida charging onto the beach and congregating in large numbers once it was officially reopened, and I asked myself a multiple choice question. Like a take-off on Jeopardy, I will provide the response choices and it’s your task to supply the correct question:

a. people with IQ’s in the mid-two-digits

b. people with a death wish

c. Trump voters

d. all of the above

  • I know that lots of people are suffering in lots of ways as the result of having to stay home. Still, I just cannot fathom the protests against responsible behavior that are breaking out throughout the country. Who are these people? (See the choices above.)
  • Haven’t heard much of Joe Biden lately, but perhaps that’s just as well. When he did get any notice a few days ago, it was for blathering on about responding to COVID-19, incoherently referring back to World War II in his typical forward-looking manner. I keep on saying to myself, over and over again, “So much better than Trump. So much better than Trump. So much…”
  • As for Biden’s running mate, the worst suggestion I have heard is Elizabeth Warren. Yes, she’s a woman, but she’s polarizing and hasn’t shown that she can attract voters, even in Massachusetts. She’d be better than Hillary as a running mate, but just barely.
  • My choice for Veep is not at the top of many lists, but I think she’s terrific. Val Demings represents Florida’s  10th Congressional District in the House, and before that was Orlando’s chief of police for four years. A youthful 62 years old, she is African- American, the daughter of a maid and an orange grove worker, and is smart, personable, and articulate. I saw her on a Sunday morning interview, and she’s been my favorite ever since. Check her out. Recommend her to our friend Joe.
