Lock Her Up–No; Off with Her Head–Yes

So I open up my newsfeed today and read that Donald Trump is proposing that we try Liz Cheney for treason—and it fills me with both terror and joy. I know, you say that you can easily understand my reaction of terror. It is truly scary that this seriously deranged individual, emboldened by the ruling of his Supreme Court, believes that he could get away with this—trying and imprisoning any and all of his political enemies, defining these as legitimate and official political acts.

Liz Cheney, you are accused of consistently standing up against der Fuhrer. This is certainly an act of high treason. But let’s not stop there. Let’s go all the way, the Trumpster has actually endorsed. We need televised military tribunals for all who have opposed me, just to put the fear of God into anyone who might ever dare to speak out against me.

I’m sure that Vladimir Putin is observing all this with envy. He feels comfortable poisoning his enemies quietly, but has never had the nerve to go as far as Trump has proposed. Although long dead, the Ayatollah Khomeini must be doing somersaults in his grave. “Finally,” he would say if alive, “even the United States has learned how to rule. And my good American friend, Mr. Trump, please remember that all of this would be hollow without public beheadings.”

But how could any of this possibly fill  me with joy?

I, like many others who can’t get to sleep at night worrying about a Trump Presidency, have called for Biden to step aside for someone younger, stronger, and more vital. I worry that the sight of Biden stumbling over his words and looking hopelessly lost will be the one indelible image that will stay with citizens when they choose between these two men, each unfit for office, but for completely different reasons.

Since I fear that that Joe Biden is incapable of changing that awful image in our minds, my only hope is that Trump can replace it with a vision of himself that is even worse. I see it now in my head: Trump as chief executioner, sitting at the head of the military tribunal, replacing “Lock her up” with “Off with her head.” It not only far scarier, but also far more vivid than that of a bumbling Biden. Could it be that Trump’s narcissism and appetite for revenge, stated loudly and  proudly,  will be the one thing that convinces anyone who is even slightly rational or moderate that he is not fit for office.  And what make me even more “joyful” is that Trump cannot stop himself nor does he listen to his advisors when it comes to revealing the true darkness that lies inside him.

So tonight I will finally get myself some needed shut-eye in the belief that the majority of American voters cannot possibly buy into Trump’s scary vision of a police state?

The choice, America, is not a pretty one: Will it be sad-man or mad-man?
