Five Thoughts on Everyone’s Favorite President

As the 2020 election comes closer and closer, all sorts of random thoughts and questions have been floating round my brain. Here’s a sampling of the latest:

1–How long could it possibly take to complete a tax audit? Unlike every other Presidential candidate in the modern era, long before the 2016 election Donald Trump refused to release his taxes saying that he could not while he was being audited. But that was five years ago. I don’t care how complex the issues are, five years is a long time, a very long time. Two footnotes to this thought: a) I don’t believe for a moment that the Trickster would release his taxes once the audit was completed. I’m just curious what excuse he would come up with next. b) Maybe seeing his taxes is just morbid curiosity on my part. The information recently released by the NY Times seems to be damning enough, but apparently nothing sticks to Teflon Don.

2–I was ticked off that NBC put the Trump town hall directly opposite Biden’s, although it’s not much trouble to have put one or both on DVR. My guess is that lots of folks toggled back and forth between the two. But if nothing else, have competing town halls directly opposite one another gave Donald Trump the chance to proclaim loudly that his ratings were higher than his opponent’s. Sorry, Donald, I know that those sort of numbers are the ones you care about most, but you see, Joe’s TV show got higher ratings than yours.

3–Talking about town halls, hooray for Savannah Guthrie. I don’t watch NBC morning or news shows, so I couldn’t say I knew much about you. But you were tough and didn’t take crap from the Donald. And when the Commander in Chief said that he didn’t know much about QAnon, you told him what they were about and pushed him to disavow them. When all that he could produce is that they were against pedophilia, you looked directly at him and made it clear that, like many of us, you were in utter disbelief. Then, noting that he should act responsibly in terms of what he retweets, you had the nerve/honesty to tell him “You’re the President–you know, you’re not just somebody’s crazy uncle?” Bravo to you. Footnote: Concerning his QAnon comments, has Donald Trump lost the pedophilia vote? They were one of his staunchest voting blocs.

4–Among the questioners at last week’s Trump town hall were a mother-daughter pair, mother a physician-researcher leaning Trump, and adult daughter leaning very much the other way. They were interviewed on CNN the next day, and after admitting to Trump’s terrible performance on the pandemic as well as other faults, the mother still said she was likely to vote for Trump. An adult woman, highly educated, lucid and otherwise capable of rational thought—why could she possibly be voting for Trump? I don’t get it.

5–One more debate left, assuming that Trump somehow doesn’t object to the rules and put the kibosh on it. Will the Trumpster be completely wild and out of control, like a bloodied boxer in the tenth round hoping to land one wild knockout punch? Will Biden deke and duck and hold his own while his opponent tosses one wild, off-target haymaker after another. Does the moderator, Kristen Welker of NBC, have body armor? disability insurance? any idea what she’s getting herself into?
