Yesterday was a really important day–on two counts.
First, the Electoral College (Biden’s safety school) met and cast its votes for Joseph Biden Jr to become the 46th President of the United States. Even Mitch McConnell has temporarily emerged from his shell to vaguely acknowledge that the fat lady has sung. And Vladimir Putin, Trump’s buddy, Trump’s hero, has seen the writing on the wall and contacted the former Vice President to play nice, for now, with the new leader of the free world.
On a different stage, but equally important, the COVID vaccine began arriving at hospitals and health care facilities throughout the country. At many facilities, it was nice to see that the lineup of those getting the highest priority included janitorial staff as well as physicians, nurses, and hospital techs. My sleeve is already rolled up. Just let me know when I can get the shot and start thinking about getting back to life as normal. I’ve been ready for a while now.
But on that momentous day when I should have been totally focused on really important things, I’m embarrassed to say that I was consumed by the third story of the day, the resignation of Attorney General Bill Barr, to spend, as Trump suggested, some quality time with his family for the Holidays (ha!).
Having thought that Bill Barr was truly the lowest of low-lifes, I realized that I’m wrong. I’m reminded that Donald J Trump makes him seem like a saint and a paragon of virtue. Next to Trump, Bill Barr seems principled, virtuous, righteous, scrupulous, high-minded and upstanding. Unlike his comrade, Barr is also smart enough to recognize that the SS Trump has taken on enough water to take its place next to the Titanic. While Trump is King Rat, the rat that is Bill Barr knows enough to desert a sinking ship.
And then I realized it. Like so many of his supporters who cannot give up their full-time love of Donald Trump, I am apparently stuck with a similar obsession, but in my case despising and abhorring the man 24-7.
So I declare today: Enough! I am rolling up my other arm to receive the Trump-vaccine. I hope it will make me immune from his despotism, free from his stupidity, protected from his whims, safe to go about my business as if I actually lived in a world that makes sense. With this shot in the arm, produced by Biden rather than Pfizer, I hope to become resistant to those forces that make it hard to breathe freely in the air of democracy, resistant to Donald J.
And I’m scheduled for my booster shot on Jan 20.
